Reading Autobiography

Reading Autobiography  by Merel van der Veer

When I was a little child my parents used to read bedtime stories such as ‘Jip en Janneke’ and ‘Het grote boek van Merel’ (little stories in one big book). I never read books in my spare time when I was a child. I was not really interested and I am a real slow reader so it took me a lot of time to finish reading a book. At primary school we never really had to read books. I remember the teacher read books out loud during his ‘dagopening’ and I really liked that. Later on in my primary school period my mother sometimes took me to the library where I had to pick a book, so I did read books in that period (Carry Slee, dutch books). When I went to secondary school I stopped going to the library, but all of a sudden I started to like the Harry Potter saga and read all the books a couple of times, out of enthusiasm. I read them in dutch. In this period I really liked reading, especially fantasy books. For my courses at school I actually never had to read any books, at least I can’t remember. After reading all the Harry Potter books so many times that I could literally write the books by heart, I started to read the Twilight Saga, in English. These books were actually a bit too difficult for me in that period, but I managed to understand a lot and loved everything about it (the books are way better than the movies!!). After this I never read any books until this summer, which is quite shocking. A friend of mine recommended ‘the Help’, and when I started reading this book during my summer holiday, I finished it in three days. I was impressed by how that book got to me. I actually had to cry in the end. I think it is a very good thing that we have to read books for this course, because I don't read a lot. The thing is that I really like reading a book when I think it is good, but I can't seem to find time for it. I hope this course will help me to find the motivation to read more!
